2019 Acura RDX vs. 2019 Lexus NX
The 2019 Acura RDX and 2019 Lexus NX have a lot in common. Both come from renowned Japanese luxury car brands, value reliability and comfort over raw performance, and offer models with sports car-like appearance packages (RDX A-Spec and NX 300 F Sport).

For the 2019 model year, the Acura RDX enters its third generation. Its all-new design is its most ambitious redesign ever–not just matching the exterior of other recently redesigned Acura models–but offering a new interior as well.
With eye-catching sharp body lines, and extremely angular headlights and taillights, the new RDX truly stands out as a luxury SUV. With its A-Spec package, the new design for 2019 becomes even more of a stand out. With beautiful, exclusive 20-inch black wheels, the RDX A-Spec looks menacing, especially contrasted with the available red, white, and blue color options. They do an amazing job of showcasing the blacked-out trim that’s also exclusive to the A-Spec model.
Compared to the RDX in the luxury crossover SUV segment, the 2019 Lexus NX is probably the most similar in terms of exterior design. Both offer sweeping modern designs that offer more sharp lines and angular grilles and lights compared to the designs of their German rivals like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
In terms of angular design and sharp edges, the NX goes a little overboard with its exterior. Those exaggerations are made even more clear when you choose the F Sport model that, similar to the A-Spec on the RDX, offers blacked-out trim and a more sports car-like design. The front end is sharp line after sharp line, and the oversized trapezoid-like grille may turn off some looking for more of a subtle look for a daily driver.
Interior and Technology
Another area where the RDX and NX are similar is the interior. Both models offer ultrawide displays for infotainment systems and utilize a touchpad to interact with the system.
Looking at the base models, there’s no doubt that the 2019 Acura RDX offers a lot of extra standard features compared to the 2019 Lexus NX. The two biggest are the panoramic moonroof, which is not offered on the NX, and heated seats. Combined as individual options, those will add $1,540 to your NX’s price.
The RDX also features Apple CarPlay (Android Auto coming soon) standard on all models, but Lexus is only offering the smartphone/infotainment integration on two 2019 models: the ES and upcoming UX.
In terms of package levels, the RDX and NX offer similar options. While Acura simplifies the packages into 3 core offerings: Technology, A-Spec, and Advance, the Lexus package system is separated into 4 core offerings: Navigation, Comfort, Premium, and Luxury.
Both models offer a lot of premium features, such as wood interior trim, heated/ventilated fronts seats, memory seats, heated steering wheel, powerful premium audio systems, and surround-view camera systems. But again, the RDX offers a bit more than the NX.
For example, the NX does not offer heated rear seats, which the RDX does with the Advance Package. It also offers a 16-speaker ELS 3D sound system, while the NX’s premium system only offers 10 speakers. The extra speakers in the RDX’s ELS system are put next the rear passengers and above each seat to immerse the vehicle in the audio experience.
The similarities between the 2019 Acura RDX vs. 2019 Lexus NX don’t end with the exterior and interior. In fact, they also share similar engines. Let’s find out how they perform when put head-to-head!
The RDX’s new engine brings a new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine to replace the outgoing generation’s 3.6-liter V6 engine. Offering incredible performance, it boasts 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The huge increase in torque over the outgoing V6, thanks to the turbocharger, allows the RDX’s new engine to offer 40% more low-end torque for quick accelerating!
The Lexus NX’s engine is also a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but its power can’t rival the all-new RDX. Pushing 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the only saving grace for the NX’s performance is that it slightly beats the 2019 RDX’s fuel economy numbers.
The NX 300 AWD gets a combined 24 MPG (22 city / 28 highway), but the RDX with SH-AWD gets 23 MPG (21 city / 27 highway)*. A very miniscule difference, but the increased performance more than justifies the difference in 1 MPG!
Lexus does offer a hybrid model the NX 300h, but it lacks a large fuel economy difference compared to the standard NX 300. At a combined 31 MPG (33 city / 30 highway), it may save a few bucks for city-only drivers, but the difference of only 2 MPG for highway driving doesn’t make it a commuter-friendly choice when you consider its 0-60 mph time is 9.1 seconds vs. the standard model’s 7.0-second time (AWD model).
According to Motor Trend’s estimate, the 2019 Acura RDX has a 0-60 mph time of 6.0 seconds!
Which is Right for You?
