Exterior

At first glance, the 2019 Acura RDX might look similar to another recently redesigned Acura SUV: the MDX. Utilizing the company’s new diamond pentagon grille, the 2019 RDX will be the fourth new Acura vehicle to receive the exterior upgrade after the MDX, TLX, and RDX.

Compared to the 2018 RDX, however, there’s more than meets the eye with the 2019 RDX’s redesign. While the 2019 model is the same height as the 2018 model, the new RDX will be longer and feature a wider stance. According to Acura, the wheelbase is 2.6 inches longer, allowing for more room inside the cabin and a more sporty appearance on the outside.

The chassis is also said to be more stiff, and the new body design features bold new lines that add to an overall more sporty look for the new model. The RDX is topped off by next-generation LED headlights, which feature seven LED light elements, and “dragon tail” LED tail lights.

Following in the footsteps of the TLX, the RDX will also receive the first-ever A-Spec package on an Acura SUV. These sport appearance upgrades offer 20-inch Shark Grey wheels with low profile tires for a more sports car-like stance. Black accents around the exterior give the A-Spec RDX a unique look, along with large dual exhaust tips and A-Spec badging. These models also receive a number of interior upgrades, which will be discussed in the next section.

Interior

The interior of the 2019 Acura RDX is where things really get exciting, especially for those who love technology.

Stepping into the 2019 RDX, many of the changes made from the 2018 model year are apparent immediately. One of the most notable changes is the new 10.2-inch widescreen HD setup that replaces the dual-screen infotainment setup seen on the previous generation RDX.

With this 10.2-inch display comes a new infotainment interface called True Touchpad. Like the name suggests, it allows the driver to control the upgraded infotainment system using a touchpad located conveniently in front of the center console. It’s positioned where your hand may have previously accessed the shifter with a new padded wrist rest, allowing for natural and comfortable use of the new system.

The True Touchpad also works unlike any other in the industry. Instead of having to locate a cursor to move around the interface, the touchpad is mapped to the display, allowing you to touch a position on the touchpad and interact with that position on the screen. Called “absolute positioning,” this means you can touch any position on the touchpad and interact with that part of the display’s interface.

Comfort is taken very seriously in the 2019 Acura RDX. Featuring available 16-way power seats with thigh support and side bolsters, the new model has full-grain Nappa leather seats But the quality doesn’t end there: the new RDX also shows off real wood and metal accented throughout the interior when properly equipped.

On the A-Spec variant, the interior features sports seats that come in black or red leather with premium Ultrasuede inserts and contrasting stitching. Along the center console, there’s real aluminum to give the car a premium look and soft-touch Ultrasuede along the doors and instrument panels to create an additional feel of luxury. Even the gauge cluster is unique for the A-Spec model, with a satin silver finish that features red-illuminated readouts during nighttime driving.

If we stopped here, the updates made to the upcoming 2019 RDX would be more than enough to turn many lookers into buyers. But Acura added even more reasons to love the new model by adding an ultra-wide panoramic moonroof–said to be the largest in its class–as a standard feature in all-new RDX.

Performance

Acura has announced that the 2019 RDX will feature an all-new standard engine. A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is replacing the outgoing V6 engine–the first turbocharged engine the company has offered in the RDX since its first generation ended in 2012. This new engine is said to provide 40% more low-end torque compared to the RDX’s current V6 engine, allowing for a more responsive start at low speeds or a full stop.

With 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque being output from the new engine, it may not seem like a big difference from the V6 on paper, but the turbocharger will provide a noticeable difference in speed from a stop. Fuel economy numbers are not released, but turbocharged four-cylinder engines are typically more efficient than naturally-aspirated V6 engines.

Combined with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, the 2019 Acura RDX is set to make a splash in the luxury SUV market.

The 2019 RDX will also feature a second-generation, newly-engineered Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD). According to Acura, this system features the most advanced and capable torque-vectoring AWD system in the RDX’s segment. Torque vectoring is what allows the AWD system to send different amounts of power to the wheels in order to maintain traction and boost performance. Acura has also stated that the 2019 RDX offers a 150% increase in torque capacity compared to the outgoing 2018 model.

This system can also take advantage of the 2019 model’s multilink rear suspension, all-new adaptive damper system, and the drive modes inspired by the NSX. The drive modes include Sport (default), Sport Plus, Comfort, and Snow.
